An early spring and still enjoying “winter”

We’ve been getting treated to some early spring weather in Fernie, while Fernie Alpine Resort continues to enjoy “winter” with another 75cms of snow in the last week. Crazy isn’t it?! As soon as the sun shines and the temperature rises to 10C, the town comes alive. Residents and visitors can be seen enjoying the shops and views from downtown Fernie. Friends and families enjoying a walk or bike ride along the Elk River, catching a glimpse of the fisherman enjoying an early start to the season.

Don’t let the mention of warm weather scare you as Fernie Alpine Resort will be open until April 12th. They’ve got fun filled activities and family events planned starting with the Kokanee Retro Weekend on March 21st. Are you ready for another totally bodacious day out on the slopes?! Bust out your one piece ski suits and headbands, spandex and other retro ski gear and join in all the festivities! The Plaza Beer Gardens will be a sea of retro looks as our DJ will be spinning all your favourite 70’s and 80’s tracks, as always, along with non-stop Glacier Ice Cold Kokanee!
The party doesn’t stop there, join in at the Griz Bar at night for the 4th official Hot Tub Time Machine celebration party and be transported back to the 80’s with your favourite tunes. The following weekend on March 28th, the Griz bar comes alive again with the Brian Rosen Trio (reggae/classic rock band from Nelson) will play live in the Griz Bar from 3pm – 6pm and 9pm – 11.30pm.

On April 3rd, a new event comes to Fernie! For the first time Fernie Alpine Resort is hosting a winter fat bike weekend. The weekend events will include a fun dual slalom race on the lower mountain where bikers will go head to head to see who is the fastest. Bikers will also test their skills with a variety of fun challenges and competitions such as wheelie comp’s, slow races and more! On Saturday night Fernie Alpine Resort will also be hosting a fundraiser for the Fernie Mountain Bike Club featuring one of Canada’s favorite tribute bands – BCDC! Tickets will will be $25 with a portion of the ticket sales going towards the Bike Club. BCDC Tickets are on sale now at Stubhub.

For the final weekend, April 11-13 the Raging Elk Powder, Pedal, Paddle Relay is back! Another local’s favourite – the PPP has been going strong since 1984! Teams of 1-5 people ski, bike, paddle & run in for fun (yet competitive)! relay race. Followed by a great dinner & party, this is the perfect season ender! During the day catch 54-40 as the hit the stage for Fernival at 3:30pm. Celebrate another season in Fernie with live music in the plaza.

Celebrate the last day of the season on April 13th with the Coca Cola slope soaker. Strap on your skies or snowboard and see if you can make it across our Slope Soaker pond located on the lower mountain beside the Timber Chair. Participants are encouraged to dress up in creative costumes as crossing the pond is not the only goal. Extra prizes and points will be awarded for creativity/costumes, effort, crowd reaction, biggest splash etc. Plus all the registered participants are entered in for amazing draw prizes from great sponsors!
