The Paleo Trail offers visitors an exciting opportunity to explore the geological and fossil history of the Canadian Rockies, whilst witnessing the beautiful and dramatic landscape of the region.
Tucked into the stunning landscape of the Elk Valley, Fernie is known for its mountain adventures, breathtaking scenery and rich natural history. But beyond the hiking trails and spectacular views lies a story that began millions of years ago.

Welcome to the Fernie Paleo Trail — where every step is a journey into the ancient past.
Imagine a time when the landscape around Fernie looked dramatically different and prehistoric creatures roamed the region. The Paleo Trail offers visitors a fascinating opportunity to explore the geological and fossil history of the area while enjoying the beauty of the surrounding Rocky Mountains.

A rare ichthyosaur fossil known as Fernatator prenticei (“Fernie Swimmer”) was discovered near Fernie and named in honour of the town and Tom Prentice, who found it over a century ago. This remarkably intact specimen was detailed enough to allow scientists to identify it as a newly discovered species!

The Fernie Ammonite is a massive fossil accessible by foot on the Ammonite Trail. 150 million years old and the size of a large truck tire, it is the largest complete ammonite fossil ever found in Canada. If you decide to skip the hike out to this incredible site, there is a replica in the Tourist Info Center that you can examine, but you might prefer to check out the real thing!
This is more than just a walk through the woods. It’s a chance to slow down, look closely at the landscape and discover clues that connect the Fernie of today with a world that existed millions of years ago.
Adventure Meets Discovery

One of the best things about the Fernie Paleo Trail is the combination of outdoor adventure and hands-on learning.
As you explore, take time to appreciate the surrounding mountains, forests and unique geological features. The trail provides an opportunity for families, curious travellers, hikers and history enthusiasts alike to learn about the forces that have shaped this incredible part of British Columbia.
Bring your sense of curiosity — you never know what fascinating piece of the past might capture your attention.
