Fernie’s extensive biking and hiking trails bring big competitions

Fernie have seen more sunshine in the last 2 weeks than all winter and to be honest no one is complaining! When the sun comes out, Fernie comes alive. You smell the neighbours delicious steak from Back Country Meats being BBQ’d. The streets become filled with residents riding their bicycles or walking their dogs. The biking trails start to lose their snow coverings and become tracked out once again by mountain bike enthusiasts. Summer is beginning to attract more and more visitors who slowly turn into residents and start to live by the saying “I came for the winter, but stayed for the summer”.

With Fernie’s extensive variety of mountain bike trails many endurance and physically challenging bike oriented races take place every year.

June 3rd kicks off the season with the Elkford Triathlon. A classic sprint distance with a 750m swim at the Elkford Aquatic Centre, 20k bike and 5km run towards Elk Lakes and back. Compete as a team or solo. Then on June 29th-30th, the TransRockies hosts the TransRockies Ultra Bike or Run. New to Fernie this year, the event boasts a 80km ultra running event, followed by an 80km ultra biking event on the epic singletrack. You can challenge this new event solo or on teams of 3 or 6. On July 6th-7th, Mudd, Sweat and Tears, another new event to Fernie this year, challenges individuals using unique methods overs either a 5 or 10km course.

July 13th brings the return of the Lost Boys Lungbuster. A popular and challenging race that climbs 1210 vertical feet. Bikers start at the base and finish at the top of the Timber Chair at Fernie Alpine Resort, where they can celebrate at Lost Boys Cafe! The Wam Bam Dirt Jump, which keeps growing every year, takes place on July 20th. If your interested in freeride biking, then this competition is for you. Every year, riders continually impress the crowd with the mad skills at Fernie’s skate park.

The TransRockies race, taking place July 27th – 29th this year, is North America’s first multi-day mountain bike race. Starting with the TR3 in Fernie before heading to Canmore, AB. A timed trial and amazing routes including popular trails in town and at Fernie Alpine Resort and Island Lake Lodge. This event brings participants from all over the world and is known for it’s grueling and challenging course.

August 4th brings the return of the Porky Blue Ride. This popular event is back to raise funds for the Fernie Trails and Ski Touring Club and celebrating all things mountain biking! Choose a shuttle or bike from town and finish off with a BBQ and refreshment. The Highline 100 is a road cycling event that raises funds for the Fernie Alpine Ski Team and Elk Valley Hospital Foundation. This year the event is happening on August 10th and cyclists have the option to choose between a 100km or 100mile route that provides amazing scenery along the way. Heiko’s Hellish Half is back with this grueling trail race that take place on one of Fernie’s most popular hiking routes. With beautiful vistas and steep terain, racers are put to the test while enjoying epic scenery.

The Altitude with Altitude Enduro Challenge is a self-propelled multi-stage, single day downhill race new to Fernie this year. Covering various popular trails in Fernie, competitors must bike to each trail head where their downhills times will begin.

Project 9 Race test individuals on their ascending and descending, or both on one of Fernie’s most popular trails. This is a fun race held by the Fernie Mountain Bike Club. Whether you compete individually or on a team, the Tears and Gears event is fun and challenging and attracts all levels of runners and bikers. The Dirt Diggler DH Race on September 21st is a strictly downhill affair from, the top of Morrissey Ridge to the valley bottom. This even is for experiences riders only. The High Roller Poker Ride is a great way to finish the season and join the community of bikers. Held by the Fernie Mountain Bike Club, the course changes yearly. The final bike race of the season happens October 6th. The Fernie Half Marathon is an off-road course that can be challenged solo or on a team, taking it’s participants through majestic areas of Fernie.
